Merry Christmas in August, The Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joe Haden agree to a three year deal for $27 million.  Haden will receive $7 million from the Steelers, and the $4 million in guaranteed money he is owed by the Cleveland Browns. Haden gives the Steelers a Pro Bowl caliber corner across from second year man Artie Burns. Haden will help solidify a young secondary that steadily improved last season, and provide leadership.

How Does This Effect The Secondary?

Burns and Haden will be as solid as any pair has been for the Steelers in a while. Signing Haden stabilizes a position that was a subject of major concern this morning.  The Steelers signing Haden so quickly validates those concerns. Besides strengthing the position, adding Haden makes it deeper. Behind Haden and Burns is where things get interesting.

Ross Cockrell could find himself the odd man out after a horrible start this preseason. Cameron Sutton‘s emergence last week, along with Mike Hilton, could push William Gay off the roster as well. Sutton, Hilton and Coty Sensabaugh are all capable of playing both inside and out. Add Brian Allen to the mix, and the cornerbacks for the Steelers have plenty of promise, not so many concerns.

The Steelers are Serious About Winning now

The Steelers have shown just how serious they are about winning the Super Bowl now. Haden came to the Steelers to win one as well. He believes the Steelers represent his best opportunity to do so. Haden gave his heart and soul to the Cleveland Browns knowing full well he wasn’t winning anything there. He is a true professional and will find new life with the Steelers. This signing gives the Steelers so many options for matchups that didn’t exist eight hours ago. As good as Haden was in Cleveland, how much better will he be with the Steelers defense around him?
